Bird flu or H5N1 pandemic has been recognised as the leading threat to the UK by the government and emerging disease such as antibiotic resistant strains the second. While bird flu and H5N1 may not affect humans in the short term the WHO world health Organisation has alerted the world of the devastating casualty death rate of bird flu and H5N1 pandemic which ranges from the millions to apocalypse. Bird flu or H5N1 is at present an avian disease which has been shown to jump from bird to man but when it jumps from man to man bird flu will become a major threat and therefore contingency planning must be in place. Absenteeism rates for companies during a pandemic are now estimated to be around 80% and contingency planning must be undertaken.
